I have returned to the happiest place of my childhood.

It is a hot summer day. The asphalt shimmers in the midday heat.

I drive down the village street. Not a soul is in sight. I look along the row of houses, searching for my grandparents' house. I am uneasy. Will I find it again? It has been so long.

At the end of the street, I see it. It still stands there, so large, its windows shuttered. Not a single voice breaks the silence.

I have returned, but no one is there anymore
